The Local Area

Exploring the area...

Thorndon is surrounded by a network of footpaths, where many pleasant walks can be enjoyed. There is also a village church to explore. For cyclists, the quiet country lanes provide ample opportunities to explore a little further afield. A short drive away is Thornham Country Park where the natural woodland provides a habitat for abundant wildlife that can be observed firsthand whilst taking a leisurely stroll.

Nearby Framlingham, a sleepy village boasting a turreted castle and once the original seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, lies in an area which has become the centre of East Anglia's flourishing wine industry, and a number of local vineyards offer tours and tastings.

For archaeological enthusiasts, Sutton Hoo provides an absorbing day out - now managed by the National Trust, this Anglo-Saxon burial site of Raedwald (King of East Anglia), was the place where priceless treasure was discovered within a huge ship grave.

Bressingham Steam Museum and Gardens provide a further enjoyable day out nearby. Within 25 miles lie Bury St Edmunds, Norwich and the Suffolk/Norfolk coast. In addition, nearby Eye has a collection of boutique shops and groceries stores.

Food and drink...

Many local pubs and restaurants abound. The village pub The Black Horse (only 5 minutes walk away) serves excellent meals/takeaways and for something really special there's Sugar and Spice Catering or The Cherry Catering Company. There is also a village convenience shop.
